These few headlines momentarily stripped me of whatever little sense of pride I have in me for my country. But then I don’t know why I’m feeling this way. After all, these aren’t anything new. They have always been an inextricable part of life of all human societies that ever existed ever since the scavenging biped walked out of Africa. But I still find it so difficult to fathom how these scabrous incidents that are so wantonly bereft of all standards of decency, have proliferated in its current scale and magnitude to become almost a part of everyday life in this sleepy island nation of less than a third of a million people that we Maldivians so often and so proudly declare to be “100percent Muslims”.

There are many reasons as far as i concern:
1) Poverty, some live less than $4 a day.
2) Some traditions we refuse to let go for the fear of change
3) failed education system
4) failed media.
5) corrupt govt for the last 30 yrs and the tentacles of that regime continue to be present in the current state.
6)ppl's elected govt failing to tackle these issues first.
7) a state religion ( may be i should put this first) which has more power than anyother legal body in the country. A religion that practically dictates the constitution of the country. A religion that is almost 1500 years old.

You see Naimbe', while we talk about these here on the blogs or rarely on coffee tables, the other 90% of the population is naive to these obvious failures or problems. They talk about each others private life in Holhu Ashi's, which creates hatred, jealously, division in our small islands (300-1000 ppl). Whatelse can you expect in a society where the values are based on those morals; Hatred, jealously, racism, speciesm,elitism, technocratISM, xenophobiaSM.:)

Nothing failed in the Maldives except leadership. Lets hope better this time. Maldives would have remained paradise had there been something akin to responsible leadership by the previous Government.
Its shameful that Maumoon is still trying to make a come back inspire of all the colossal blunders that happened (or are allowed to happen) under his watch. That itself is the worst headline of all... such an abhorrent lack of shame for throwing the country into a pit for personal indulgences and power.
Only 38 boys? We aren't in paradise yet. Paradise promises 70 youth for every believer.

Naimbe, cheer up. Look at the positive side - today we are talking about these issues, which hopefully will mean there is more action on them than in the past. These things have been happening from way back and not just in the past 30 years - they were just never discussed in public.
Got to keep the big picture in mind my friend; do not lose the wood for the trees...you HAVE to keep believing we are moving in the right direction even though there are hiccups along the way and regardless of how dire things may seem right now. Got to keep the faith...we can and do each make a difference in our own way. Think of your inspirational namesake from time to time eh? ;-)
