Thank you President Gayoom…and Happy New Year to you too

I received my president’s customary New Year card. Just like the 36 odd thousand others in the government of Maldives I receive at least a half dozen of them every year. Every time I receive a card from him I take a few seconds to think about how bad an aesthetic sense he has before tossing it into my bin. I must tell my president that his photography obtrudes upon all my senses in a very unpleasant way.

What I have done for the past 2 years is to write: "Addressee refused to accept, returned to sender" and hand it back to the office staff for handling!

Hey, why should we criticise somebody's love for the arts? Just because Gayoom hasn't reached that aesthetic level YET, he may yet become a great photographer. I am quite sensitive when people criticise other people who are trying to pursue any kind of art form. Maybe because I a myself have been discouraged from art and music because it's supposed to be haram in Islam.
On another note, I agree: what a waste of public funds, huh?
